AIGA Field report: Navigating The New Media Frontier
April 10, 2008, 7-9pm
WGBH Auditorium, One Guest Street, Boston, 617-300-2000

What is new media and how do you design for it? With the proliferation of new modes of communication available through the internet and mobile devices, designers are faced with an ever-expanding array of strategy, design, and technological challenges. How can designers take advantage of these new opportunities? What are the considerations when designing for these new outlets? How do you think up these crazy new ideas and then get clients to buy them? This fifth event of the Field Report Series will bring together three new media experts to discuss the recent developments in new media and designer's role in this developing field. As with prior AIGA Field report events this will be a panel format with a branding expert moderator. Panelist will conduct short presentations followed by a question and answer session with moderator and audience. David Small will moderate a discussion with panelists of the Barbarian Group and Firstborn.

Stefan Sagmeister Lecture
Friday, April 25, 2008, 6:30 PM
Institute of Contemporary Art / Boston, 100 Northern Avenue, Boston

Astonishingly, Stefan Sagmeister has only learned twenty or so things in his life so far. But he did manage to publish these personal maxims all over the world, in spaces normally occupies by advertisements and promotions: as billboards, projections, light-boxes, magazine spreads, annual report covers, fashion brochures, and, recently, as giant inflatable monkeys. In this presentation Sagmeister throws his diary, a lot of design, and a little art together with a pinch of psychology and a dash of happiness into a blender and pushes the button.

Massaging Media 2: Graphic Design Education in the Age of Dynamic Media conference
Friday, April 4, 2008 - April 6, 2008
Seaport Hotel and World Trade Center, Boston

"All media work us over completely. They are so pervasive in their personal, political, economic, aesthetic, psychological, moral, ethical, and social consequences that they leave no part of us untouched, unaffected, unaltered. The medium is the massage."_- Marshall McLuhan and Quentin Fiore, The Medium is the Massage. McLuhan's prophetic words from 1967 concisely describe the state of graphic design education in the age of dynamic media. No aspect of our field-pedagogical, theoretical, technical, or social-is unaffected by dynamic media. Massaging Media 2: Graphic Design Education in the Age of Dynamic Media conference will gather a diverse group of presenters and attendees from around the world for a provocative conversation on how graphic design education is being affected by dynamic media. Through keynote presentations, panel discussions, multiple-track speaker sessions, a working lunch, and a breakfast roundtable, we will focus our discussion on five key subject areas: pedagogy; practice; theory; future history; and the institutional. www.massagingmedia.org
